Advanced Nursing Degrees

If you are considering nursing as a career you should carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in a BSN program; because the advancement opportunities usually much better. In fact, some career paths are open only to nurses with bachelors, masters nursing or doctorate degree.
Accelerated BSN programs also are available for those who have a bachelor's or higher degree in another field and who are interested in moving into the nursing field. As of 2002, there were approximately 110 of these programs were available.
Accelerated BSN programs usually last from 12 to 18 months and provide the quickest path to a BSN for individuals who already hold a degree. Accelerated masters degree in nursing programs are also available and take about 36 months to finish.
Within patient care, nurses can move into a nursing specialty like a clinical nurse specialist, certified nurse midwife, nurse practitioner or certified registered nurse anesthetist. These positions require about 2 years of graduate schooling to earn your a master degree nursing.
On the other hand, some nurses move into the business side of health care. Their nursing experience and expertise prepare them with the ability to manage home health, ambulatory, chronic care and acute services. Many employers - including hospitals, insurance companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers and managed care organizations, among others - need RNs for health planning and development, marketing, consulting, policy development and quality assurance. Other nurses work as college and university faculty or conduct research.
The field of nursing is wide and varied and it's up to the individual to decide which path to pursue and how far to take their level of training and education.
