Pests are usually unwelcome guests.  The bed bug (cimex lectularius) is one common trespasser that can be quite a nuisance.

Bed bugs hide during the day.  Places where they like to hide include bed frames, mattresses, box springs, cracks and crevices in walls and floors.

During the night, bed bugs feed on human blood.  They leave traces of saliva on their victims after each feeding.  Repeated bites may cause some people to develop an allergic reaction and require medical attention.

With a bit of planning and work, bed bug infestations can be eliminated.

Before taking any action, the pest must be identified by capturing a live specimen and comparing them with pictures to make sure they are bed bugs.

Bed bugs when viewed from above are oval in shape and have a flat profile.  They become dark brown at their tips after gorging on their victims.  Adults grow to 1/4 inch long.  They can live for months without a meal.

If the bed bug problem is extensive, hiring a license pest control exterminator may be the best solution.  However, that is an alternative that could cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

If the bed bug infestation isn't as extensive, then various over the counter insecticides can be purchased by anyone for general home use.  For example, Steri-Fab, Kleen Free Naturally Bedbug Spray and Pronto Kill Bedbugs and Dust Mites Spray are easy to buy online.  These do-it-yourself solutions are inexpensive when compared to hiring a professional.

Bed bugs don't spread diseases, but they do have the potential of causing their human victims to develop allergic reactions from repeated bites.  A professional exterminator can help get rid of bed bugs if they have taken over the bedroom.  If cost is an issue, but time isn't, then retail versions of insecticides can be used by the average person to get rid of bed bugs.
