Quick Adelie Penguin Facts

randomguy @ 6:02 pm

In the penguin realm there are many different types of penguins that all come in different shapes, sizes and unique features. When it comes to the smaller penguins, Adelie penguins are one of the most known.

The name of these cute little penguins is one of the more interesting of all the Adelie penguin facts. They were named by the French explorer Admiral Durmont d' Urville in the early 1800s to honor his wife.

They are found in the Antarctic region of the world and are the smallest type of penguin found in that region. Their tails are stiff and they have really long tail feathers that often drag behind them when their waddling along on the ice.

Throughout the world there are over 30 known Adelie penguin colonies. Within these colonies there are over 2.5 million pairs of breeding Adelie's.

These birds are usually around 28 inches high when they're standing and usually weigh in around 8 to 9 lbs when they are fully grown.

When it comes to colors, they have a black back and head with white feathers that circle their eyes and create a stunning contrast. Their bellies are also white.

The feathers on their face are long enough to nearly cover their entire beak, which is a reddish color.

Usually, they will lay two eggs that are brown or green in color. Unlike some other types of penguins, Adelie male and females take turns taking care of the eggs while the other is off getting food for the pair.
